Voter Qualifications (Candidate Qualifications)

To register to Vote in the State of Georgia, you must be:

  • A citizen of the United States
  • A legal resident of Georgia
  • Be at least 17 1/2 years of age (at least 18 years of age to vote)
  • Not be serving a sentence for a conviction of felony involving moral turpitude
  • Have not been found mentally incompetent by a judge

 

How to Register
You can register to vote at the Sumter County Board of Elections and Voter Registration Office located at the Sumter County Courthouse. There are several convenient methods of signing up to vote, including registration by mail and "Motor Voter" registration.

"Motor Voter" registration is offered when you renew or apply for your driver's license.

Mail-in registration forms are available from your county board of registrar's office, public libraries, and Department of Public Safety.

 
Change of Residence
If you move to a new county, you must fill out another voter registration application.

If you move within the same county, you do not need to re-register, but you must fill out a change of address form with your new address. This can be done by coming into the Sumter County Board of Elections and Voter Registration Office or you may write to:

  • Social Security Number
  • Old Address

Absentee Ballots

You may request absentee ballots as early as 180 days before an election.(No absentee ballots are issued on Election Day.) Ballot request forms are available at:

or you may request an absentee ballot by submitting the following information, in writing, to the Voter Registration Office. Request must include:

  • Name of election, date of election (if primary, declare party preference)
  • Reason absentee ballot is being requested
  • Voter's name and address as registered
  • Voter's date of birth
  • Voter's mother's maiden name
  • Mailing address where ballot will be mailed to
  • Voter's signature
    • (may be signed by specified relative if voter is temporarily
      out of county or if voter is physically disabled)

After completing the request, please submit to the Sumter County Board of Elections and Voter Registration Office in person, or by mail.

NOTE: If the absentee ballots are available, when appearing in person with your request you must vote within the confines of the Sumter County Board of Elections and Voter Registration Office.

   
Requesting a List of Eligible Voter's

To request a list the following information is needed:

  • Your name, address, and phone number.
  • Type of list requesting.
  • A $50.00 processing fee is required before the list can be ordered.

It takes about two weeks before the list comes back from the State.
When the list comes back there is a charge of - a half of a cent (.005) per voter on the list.

   
Identification Required To Vote At Precincts
Georgia Annotated Code sections 21-2-417 and 21-3-328 requires identification at polls as follows:
  1. Each elector shall present proper identification to a poll worker at or prior to completion of a voter's certificate at any polling place and prior to such person's admission to the enclosed space at such polling place. Proper identification shall consist of any one of the following:
    • A valid Georgia driver's license;
    • A valid identification card issued by a branch, department, agency, or entity of the State of Georgia, any other state, or the United States authorized by law to issue personal identification;
    • A valid United States passport;
    • A valid employee identification card containing a photograph of the elector and issued by any branch, department, agency, or entity of the United States government, this state, or any county, municipality, board, authority, or other entity of this state;
    • A valid employee identification card containing a photograph of the elector and issued by any employer of the elector in the ordinary course of such employer’s business;
    • A valid student identification card containing a photograph of the elector from any public or private college, university, or postgraduate technical or professional school located within the State of Georgia;
    • A valid Georgia hunting or fishing license;
    • A valid Georgia license to carry a pistol or revolver;
    • A valid pilot’s license issued by the Federal Aviation Administration or other authorized agency of the United States;
      A valid United States military identification card;
    • A certified copy of the elector’s birth certificate;
    • A valid social security card;
    • Certified naturalization documentation; or a certified copy of court records showing adoption, name, or sex change.
  2. If an elector is unable to produce any of the items of identification listed in subsection (1) of this Code section, he or she shall sign a statement under oath in a form approved by the Secretary of State, separate and distinct from the elector’s voter certificate, swearing or affirming that he or she is the person identified on the elector’s voter certificate. Such person shall be allowed to vote without undue delay. Falsely swearing or affirming such statement under oath shall be punishable as a felony, and the penalty shall be distinctly set forth on the face of the statement.
